I acquired a motor from a crashed drone. It was in fact the RF same as my damaged motor location.

I salvaged the main shaft and put it on my watchmaker lathe to check runout.

It has + .045 inch and - .045 inch run out.
Is this is a bent shaft from the crash OR the machining job when created?
In a crash I suppose anything is possible.

I put the motor all back together, will this cause an issue fir the drone.
With four motors all having some runout I wonder what will be the effect overall?

A +/- .045 inch runout (total .090 inch) is very significant for a drone motor, especially in a multirotor setup.

Option 1: Try Another Shaft
  • If possible, find another motor with a good shaft.
  • Check runout before installing.
Option 2: Try Straightening
  • If you have a press, you can try carefully bending it back.
  • Not recommended unless you have precision tools, as you may cause microfractures.
Option 3: Just Replace It
  • If the drone is valuable, replacing the motor is the safest bet.
  • Even a used replacement is better than risking a crash due to vibrations.
