Clear a full SD card & save logs too?

I finally filled the SD card in the drone (pitiful that it took so long to do) and I want to be sure I have been copying the log files along with the video and image files to the laptop over the last many months. What type of files are they so I know what to look for when I am able to access the computer?
Also, is there a preferred way to format the card?
